Lucid Nightmare Therapy: Pathways to Safety, Connection, and Creativity

Broadcast on April 20, 2022
With Dr. Kristen LaMarca
Hosted by Athena Laz

Lucidity, or knowing you're dreaming, is a tool for recalibrating automatic responses to nightmares, trauma, and challenging emotions. Clinical psychologist, Dr. Kristen LaMarca, discusses how lucid dream therapy goes beyond traditional dreamwork by amplifying the most critical ingredients for therapeutic growth...your sense of safety, psychological flexibility, and capacity for self-connection.

In this session, you’ll:

  • Learn how the evolutionary bias of your nervous system constricts nightmare responses to fight, flight, or freeze
  • Discover that lucidity in nightmares can bring balance to your nervous system
  • Learn the easy-to-apply methods for inducing lucid dreaming and rehearsing effective responses

Psychologist & Researcher, Lucidity Institute, Lucidity Sleep & Psychiatry

Dr. Kristen LaMarca is a clinical psychologist with expertise in applied psychophysiology, sleep disorders, and lucid dreaming therapy. She has been co-facilitating intensive training on lucid dreaming with Stephen LaBerge’s Lucidity Institute since 2010. She published research on an integrated protocol for maximizing lucid dream induction and the effects of galantamine and light cue stimulation on lucidity.

As a licensed psychotherapist, Kristen has weaved her lucid dreaming knowledge into treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, nightmare disorder, and REM behavior disorder. Thus, she has seen first-hand how lucid dreaming can help patients see and think without their usual blind spots. Through the lens of lucidity, they can face fears more creatively, process unconscious emotions, and heal themselves in gentle, focused, and playful ways.

Her book, Learn to Lucid Dream: Powerful Techniques for Awakening Creativity and Consciousness, is a guide for beginners on the best induction practices and how to apply the state for personal enrichment.
